Governments must reconcile dissonant climate assessment approaches

Nature Climate Change, Published online: 29 September 2026; doi:10.1038/s41558-026-02736-4 Security analysts and government economists increasingly present policymakers with different pictures of the same climate and nature risk. We argue that governments need a shared way to weigh these assessments, particularly given that under-preparing for a severe, irreversible outcome costs far more than over-preparing.

Preparing for disasters

Nature Sustainability, Published online: 30 September 2026; doi:10.1038/s41893-026-01956-y The impacts of extreme natural events are dramatic for both people and physical infrastructure. More can and should be done to contain the damage and prevent loss of life.

Restoration-driven positive and negative leakage in sub-Saharan Africa

Nature Sustainability, Published online: 30 September 2026; doi:10.1038/s41893-026-01936-2 Restoration initiatives are important for progress towards climate and biodiversity policy goals; however, whether they lead to the displacement of tree loss elsewhere (leakage effect) is still unclear. This study examines the leakage impacts of restoration projects in sub-Saharan Africa.

Navigating the land–energy nexus for carbon-neutral power systems in China

Nature Sustainability, Published online: 30 September 2026; doi:10.1038/s41893-026-01941-5 As countries expand renewable energy to reach net zero, finding suitable land is becoming increasingly challenging. A new China-wide optimization study shows that land constraints redirect renewable development, increase transmission needs and raise 2060 system costs by up to 4.1%.

An historic fishery collapse driven by socioeconomic and environmental factors

Nature Sustainability, Published online: 28 September 2026; doi:10.1038/s41893-026-01937-1 The collapse of the western Baltic herring fishery by the year 1570 caused large disruptions. Using a time series of Baltic herring catches spanning 450 years, this study examined the socioeconomic and environmental drivers of the collapse, offering lessons for fisheries management today.
